Courtney Residence, The Estuary, Walton County, Florida
2,530 square feet
The primary concern with this residence was the desire to create a harmonious balance with the natural setting.
The lot is characterized by tall pine trees and the house responds to the strong vertical lines of the trees by expressing a strong horizontal character as a contrast. The large four-foot roof overhangs and horizontal banding contribute to this effect. To complement, the house is simply and cleanly detailed so as not to compete visually with the native vegetation. The primary articulation of the facade comes from texture and contrasting color; dark stained wood at the entry porch contrasting against white stucco walls.
The wood louvered detail at the entry and rear porches is also a historical reference to wood shutters that would have been common on fishing cabins found along the shores of nearby Choctawhatchee Bay.
